Billy Leon McCrary (December 7, 1946 – July 14, 1979) and Benny Loyd McCrary (December 7, 1946 – March 26, 2001) were a pair of American professional wrestlers known as The McGuire Twins. Recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the “World’s Heaviest Twins,” they weighed 328 kilograms (723 lb) and 338 kilograms (745 lb) respectively.
Born in Hendersonville, North Carolina, the twins faced health challenges from a young age. Contracting rubella (German measles) at the age of 4 affected their pituitary glands and caused them to experience weight gain. Despite their parents’ efforts to increase physical activity on a farm and restrict their calorie intake to 1,000 per day, the weight gain persisted. By the time they reached 10 years old, they each weighed 200 pounds, and by 16, they weighed 600 pounds. Dropping out of high school, they relocated to Texas where they found work in livestock branding.
Their journey into the wrestling world began when they spent three years working at Circus Circus in Las Vegas. Subsequently, they performed their minbike routine in Los Angeles for a short period. A wrestling promoter noticed them in El Paso, Texas and convinced them to embark on a wrestling training program in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. They dedicated themselves to weightlifting and regular running sessions. Finally, in December 1971, at the age of 25, they made their wrestling debut in Texas, facing Bull Ramos and Cyclone Negro but ultimately losing the match.
From 1974 to 1978, the twins competed in various matches in Japan under the organization of New Japan Pro-Wrestling. They defeated prominent tag teams like Kantaro Hoshino and Seiji Sakaguchi, as well as Osamu Kido and Riki Choshu. To facilitate the pronunciation by Japanese ring announcers, they adopted the stage name McGuire, the French version of their last name.
During their wrestling career, the McGuire Twins frequently utilized a finishing move known as the “Tupelo Splash.” This move involved one of the twins diving belly-first onto a downed opponent. They would follow it up with “The Steamroller,” wherein the twin rolled back and forth over the opponent.
Tragically, Billy McCrary’s life was cut short at the age of 32 on July 14, 1979, due to a motorcycle accident in Niagara Falls while en route to a Ripley’s Believe It or Not! museum.
After Billy’s death, Benny attempted to continue wrestling, partnering with Andre the Giant. However, he did not find success without his brother. Benny subsequently opened a pawn shop and worked as an auctioneer in Hendersonville. Eventually, he moved to Walkertown, North Carolina, where he joined the Christian Golfers Ministry. However, due to knee problems that eventually left him bedridden, he could no longer actively participate.
Benny passed away at the age of 54 on March 26, 2001, due to heart failure. The brothers were laid to rest side by side in a cemetery near Hendersonville. Their gravestone features images of two Honda motorcycles and bears the inscription “World’s Largest Twins.”
Both twins were married to sisters named Maryse and Danielle Juarry, whom they met in Montreal. Benny embraced evangelicalism and enjoyed playing golf, continuing until he became bedridden.
